How to Manage Cookies in Chrome?

What are Cookies?

Cookies are small files, stored on users’ computer. They are assigned by the website that you visit and stored by the web browser. It is like the identification code for the website you visit. The next time you visit the same website it will recognize you and provide you personalized results.

How it got name “Cookies”:

Lou Montulli, a web browser programmer coined the term cookie. It is derived from the term “magic cookie” and are packet of data used by UNIX programmer which are send and received back as it is.

Types of Cookies:

There are 2 main types of cookies -

1) Session Cookies:

These cookies are temporary cookies i.e these cookies does not have expiry dates unlike other cookies they are deleted by the browser as soon as the user closes the browser. They are also called as in-memory cookies or transient cookies.

2) Persistent Cookies:

These cookies have certain expiry time assigned by the browser. They won’t get deleted until the user deletes it from its browser’s history or until its expiry duration comes. cookie's entire lifespan , its information will be transmitted to the server every time the user visits the website that it belongs to, or every time the user views a resource belonging to that website from another website. For this reason persistence cookies are also called as “tracking cookies”.

Why Cookies are Used?

1) Tracking:
By tracking the cookie we can track the browser’s searching habits. It proves to be useful for the inbound marketer to show them the advertisements of their interests.

2) Personalization:
The user sets their preferences by submitting them in a form format to the server. The server then encodes these preferences in form of cookies and sends them back to the web browser. In this way the server personalize the pages with reference to the user’s preference

3) Session management:
A unique session identifier is send by the web server whenever any user logins to the site. After logging onto the website the server identifies whether the assigned cookie is authenticated or not and then gives permission for the access.

4) Security:
A cookie is stored only on the browser that you are using and not on the website. If it would be stored on the web site it would have become easier for the hackers to hack it.
